My Purple Pocket Malden

With Christmas just around the corner, I've been scrambling trying to finish up last minute holiday crafts, cards, & wrapping gifts. Sadly, we've decided not to have a Christmas tree this year for fear of my youngest child just tearing it apart. I have put up other decorations so there is some Christmas spirit in the house. Plus, the fact that it seemed like the year went by so fast, soon enough I will just be putting away decorations. My hands are full enough, so I'd rather not stress about decorations and such. What's more important are the people you spend Christmas with. With the recent losses in Newton, Connecticut, it had really made me embrace my children a little tighter, and has made me feel blessed to continue to have two beautiful, healthy children at my side, and a wonderful husband who continues to loves me for who I am. My heartfelt condolences to anyone who has lost someone dear to them this year.

On a lighter note, I've been meaning to blog about my purple malden for sometime. I apologize for those of you who have been waiting for this post.

On a recent Filofax Adventure (which my next post will be on), I came across the purple malden. I had the intention of buying a Personal Malden, but upon inspecting it, I found that:
  1. the leather seemed to have a plastic feel to it, not soft, more rigid, and very cracked
  2. it was so stiff from the reinforced spine that when I opened it, it wanted to just close up
  3. it felt like i had to force it to open so much that the bottom rings would gap

Does not open flat at all!

Since it was the only one the had in stock, I raised the issue with the manager, to at least maybe give me a discount, unfortunately he did not agree with my findings, and would only sell it as is. But as I was about to lose hope, in the corner of my eye I saw - a pocket purple malden!!!

Left: Personal size/ Right: Pocket size

As I held it in my hands I felt a noticeable difference. The leather was softer, more supple, it had more give unlike the Personal, so even though it didn't lay totally flat, I knew in time it would. I couldn't let go of it, and so I got it as my birthday present for myself.

It came home with me in the black box!

Unboxing!

In all it's glory!

Next to Mrs. Malden (Pocket Malden in Grey)

Not laying flat out of the box.

When I got the Grey Malden, it laid flat out of the box compared to the Purple Malden

One month later and it is now laying flat. I did not do any training, I just put in some inserts and used it more often to really break in the leather.

Filofaxing on the beach!
I used it as my travel filo on my recent trip to Hawaii.

Now, I am awaiting a Personal Purple Songbird to add to my
PURPLE Collection.
=)
Happy holidays to you all!

  1. So I'm not the only one with a personal Malden with reinforcing material around the spine! When I told Filofax about it they denied the reinforcing material exists and insisted there has been no change in how the Maldens are constructed. So that means either the reinforcing material was inserted into Maldens by mistake, or Filofax is not aware of how their new Maldens are being constructed. Either way, I find it annoying and am disappointed my Malden isn't soft and floppy like the older ones.

I'm glad you love you Pocket Malden, it's gorgeous! :)

  4. I love your blog. I just got a purple, pocket Malden and am loving it. I prefer the smaller size as I was using a Finsbury personal but found it too big.

  5. @Laurie - I wonder if the Malden is the only one doing this?

@Circus Life - Glad you are loving it!

@Elizabeth - Just keep using it. When you are at home, maybe lay it flat with a book on top for a few hours each day.

@ Sara - Thank you for visiting my blog. I'm so happy you are loving your Malden.
